A warning to America

This is a quick note about an online event happening today 5pm GMT, 12pm ET. Details below. It’s too late to register but there’s a public zoom link at the bottom.

A Warning to America - 2073 and The Arrival of Techno Authoritarianism

Acclaimed director Asif Kapadia’s feature documentary 2073, in theatres now, paints a terrifying vision of a future controlled by AI and on the brink of climate collapse in an America where Chairwoman Ivanka Trump is celebrating her 30th year in power. In the United States, the reality is all too close: techno authoritarianism takes office January 20th.

Just ahead of the US presidential inauguration, The Citizens are bringing together Asif with three of the experts featured in the film who have lived with authoritarianism and reported on its dark reach: Nobel Laureate Maria Ressa, journalist and writer Rana Ayyub and journalist Carole Cadwalladr. The conversation will explore the moment we’ve arrived at, what to expect and how to fight back the rise of techno-authoritarianism. This virtual dialogue will also preview the film 2073, and hold space for audience Q&A.
