Starhawk’s Summer Travels:
Join me for one or more of these upcoming adventures!
At OUR Ecovillage on Vancouver Island:
Come take a very special Permaculture Design Certificate Course with a focus on deeply reimagining our relationship to land and community with insight from indigenous wisdom. I will be co-teaching with Petrina Devali, an indigenous leader from the island, along with James Richardson and Brandy Gallagher, founder of OUR Ecovillage.
Permaculture and OUR Ecovillage both draw inspiration and knowledge from indigenous cultures and land practices. In this program, we attempt to put some of those lessons into practice by bringing together people of all ages to learn permaculture in both theory and practice, creating a welcoming environment for families. Adults will take part in a permaculture design certificate program, following the internationally-recognized curriculum that leads to certification. Learn how to heal soil and cleanse water, how to design human systems that mimic natural systems, using a minimum of energy and resources and creating real abundance and social justice. Explore the strategies and organizing tools we need to make our visions real. Participatory, hands-on teaching with lots of ritual, games, projects, songs, and laughs along with an intensive curriculum in ecological design.
Children will take part in a program tailored to their needs and interests that parallels the adult program, with lots of hands-on projects in which both groups can share. OUR Ecovillage has been building friendships with the local Cowichan Nation for many years, and we will offer practical help and design skills to elders on the reserve. And we will have time to spend enjoying the meadows, woods, gardens, animals and our fellow students at the Ecovillage and deepening our own connection to nature.

And Two Workshops in Social Permaculture:
In this time of environmental and social meltdowns, we need one another to make positive changes and plant the seeds of a new world. But to work together, and to embrace diversity and challenge the ‘isms’ that divide us, we need the skills of building group bonds, establishing clear communication, resolving conflict creatively, and bringing forth each individual’s greatest gifts.
Collaborative, horizontal groups benefit from leadership—visionaries who can move the group into new directions, facilitators who can help the group bond and make decisions, mediators who can help the group move through conflict, mentors who can help each member find their growing edge.
Ireland
Earth Activism and Social Permaculture
This four-day intensive explores social permaculture—looking at how we can design groups, structures and new patterns that meet our core human needs and further beneficial human relationships. Together we’ll create a truly welcoming environment, where we can each be seen in the fullness and complexity of who we are. We’ll explore how to structure our groups for maximum group health, how to share power fairly, mediate conflicts and facilitate group processes. And we’ll share tools for decision making and constructive critique. Starhawk’s latest book, The Empowerment Manual: A Guide for Collaborative Groups, will be our foundation.
We’ll balance the process work with time outdoors in the beautiful natural environment at the Slieve Aughty Center. And we’ll share with rituals and personal practice to further our own sustainability and help us be more effective and joyful as we work together to regenerate our world.
Taught by Starhawk and Alfred Decker
@ Slieve Aughty Centre (Ireland), August 19 – 22.
Followed by All Ireland Permaculture Gathering at same site, August 22 – 24.
